Low-density core, thin coating, peels and swells.
Budget products use low-density filler boards. The surface coating sits on top of the core instead of being fused into it. It dents, peels, and swells the moment moisture gets underneath. This is what gave laminate its reputation.
Premium HDF core, wear layer fused under heat and pressure.
High-Density Fiberboard resists denting from furniture and dropped objects. The wear layer is bonded to the core under immense heat and pressure. It is a unified plank that will not peel or delaminate under normal home use.
What the AC Rating Actually Means
Every laminate product has a certified durability grade. It is called the AC rating and it tells you exactly how much traffic and abuse the surface can handle. Most retailers do not put it on the price tag. We always tell you upfront.

Where Laminate Belongs and Where It Does Not

- Living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms with normal use
- Kitchens where spills are wiped up quickly and there is no standing water
- Basements with a proper moisture barrier over the slab, we test this before we start
- Rental properties where you need a durable, attractive floor without the cost of hardwood
- Full home renovations where budget matters and you want consistent look throughout
- Below-grade basements with active moisture problems. A vapor barrier is not enough in this situation.
- Spaces with radiant heat floors. Most laminate products are not rated for this.
- Any room where water sits on the floor for more than a few minutes regularly. Laminate is water resistant, not waterproof.
