Is Waterproof Hardwood Flooring Real Wood?

What this page answers: how waterproof hardwood is built, how it differs from LVP, and whether it is the right choice for your home.
The direct answer

Yes. Waterproof hardwood flooring is real wood. The surface you walk on is genuine wood fiber, not a photograph of wood printed on plastic. What makes it waterproof is the construction underneath: a compressed wood core processed under high heat and pressure, combined with a locking joint system that seals the seams against moisture. It looks, feels, and ages like wood because it is wood.

What Makes It Different From Regular Hardwood

Standard engineered hardwood uses a real wood veneer glued to cross-grain plywood layers. It performs well in most homes and handles humidity variation better than solid wood. But the joints between planks are not sealed, which means water that gets into the seams can reach the plywood core and cause swelling over time.

Waterproof hardwood solves this at the joint level. The locking system is engineered to seal when planks connect, blocking moisture from reaching the core. The core itself is also denser and less reactive to moisture than standard plywood. The result is a floor that behaves predictably in kitchens and spaces where standard hardwood requires more careful management.

How It Compares to LVP

LVP is also waterproof, but it is not wood. LVP uses a photographic layer printed on a plastic or stone composite core. It looks like wood because of the image, not because of the material. Waterproof hardwood uses actual wood fiber for its surface, which means the grain variation is natural, the feel underfoot is warmer, and the floor responds to light and age in ways that LVP cannot replicate.

The trade-off is cost. LVP installed in the Bay Area runs $7 to $9 per square foot for materials and installation. Waterproof real wood flooring runs $9 to $15. For homeowners who want the feel and authenticity of real wood without giving up moisture protection, waterproof hardwood fills a category that LVP simply cannot.

Can It Be Refinished?

This depends on the specific product. The waterproofing layer on top also changes how the surface responds to sanding. They cannot be sanded and refinished the way standard engineered hardwood can.

For most Bay Area homeowners, this is not a meaningful limitation. The product is built to last 25 to 30 years without refinishing under normal household conditions. The question of whether to refinish usually does not arise within that window.

Is It Right for Bay Area Homes?

Bay Area homes vary significantly. Coastal areas near San Francisco and Alameda deal with consistent marine humidity. Inland Contra Costa cities see wider temperature swings and drier summer air. Both environments create conditions where moisture management matters at the floor level.

Waterproof hardwood handles both scenarios well. The sealed joint system protects against humidity-driven moisture in coastal homes. The dimensional stability of the compressed core handles expansion and contraction cycles in inland homes better than solid hardwood. For Bay Area households that want real wood and want to stop worrying about spills and seasonal movement, it is a strong fit.

What It Cannot Do

Waterproof hardwood is not immune to water damage from below. A slow plumbing leak under the slab, moisture rising through a concrete subfloor without a proper barrier, or standing water sitting at the perimeter for days can still create problems. The waterproofing is at the plank and joint level, not at the subfloor level.

This is true of LVP as well. The floor itself being waterproof does not make the subfloor or installation conditions immune to water. Proper moisture assessment before installation and a correctly installed moisture barrier where needed are still required regardless of how waterproof the product above it is.

Our approach

How Redeemed Flooring Handles This

We carry waterproof real wood flooring and install it regularly across the Bay Area. Before we recommend it for any specific home, we check subfloor moisture levels, assess the installation conditions, and confirm the floor height change works with existing doors and transitions. If the conditions are right, it is a product we stand behind fully.

We also tell clients what it cannot do. If someone asks whether they can stop worrying about water entirely after this floor is in, the honest answer is no floor eliminates that concern at the subfloor level. What waterproof hardwood gives you is significantly more margin, and a real wood floor that handles the everyday moisture realities of a Bay Area home without requiring anxiety about every spill.

"It looks like wood, feels like wood, and ages like wood. That is because it is wood."

Choosing the wrong floor for your moisture conditions is a mistake you live with for years.

The right floor, chosen for your actual home and installed correctly, is something you stop thinking about entirely.
