While these dense woods naturally repel moisture and pests, a consistent maintenance routine is essential to protect your investment from the California sun and seasonal rains.
Hardwood vs. Softwood Decking
Softwoods like Cedar and Redwood are pliable and offer a warm look but require frequent maintenance to prevent decay. In contrast, exotic hardwoods are much denser and more resilient. Despite their toughness, they are not “maintenance-free.” Without care, the sun’s UV rays will dry out natural oils, eventually turning the wood a weathered silver-grey.
Essential Cleaning Tips
Regular cleaning prevents debris from marring your deck’s appearance:
Sweep Frequently: Remove dirt, pollen, and leaves to prevent staining and scratches.
Move Furniture: Periodically clean under and move deck furniture to avoid trapped moisture and uneven fading.
Manage Spills: Clean spills like wine or oil immediately. Use wood-safe cleaners and a soft brush; avoid harsh bleach, which can damage organic wood fibers.
The Importance of Annual Sealing
To maintain the rich reddish-brown or golden tones of your hardwood, apply a UV-rated sealant every 12 months.
Prep: Clean the surface and address scratches with light sanding.
Apply: Use a brush to apply sealer evenly.
Wipe Excess: Hardwoods are so dense that they cannot absorb much oil. Wipe off any pooling liquid within 20 minutes to prevent the sun from “singeing” the oil and turning the wood black.
Restoring Weathered Hardwood
If your deck has already turned grey, it is not beyond repair. Because hardwood is so dense, the oxidation is only skin-deep. A low-pressure wash or professional sanding can strip away the grey layer to reveal the vibrant natural color underneath. Once restored, apply a UV protectant immediately to lock in the look.
